What even is skl?

skl is a tidy home for the little instruction kits — we call them skills — that you hand to your AI coding helper. Instead of copy-pasting the same kit into every project and computer, you keep one official copy here and hand out identical clones.

What's a "skill," in plain English?

A skill is just a folder with a cheat-sheet inside (a file named SKILL.md) that teaches your AI assistant how to do one thing well — like write commit messages a certain way, or review React code. You write it once; the AI reads it whenever it needs that trick.

What's an "AI agent," and which tools does this work with?

An AI agent is a coding assistant that can actually do things in your project, not just chat about them. skl feeds skills to six of them: Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, Gemini, and Grok. You pick which ones each skill gets sent to.

Do I need to be a programmer to use this?

Accepted Answer

Not really. You need to be okay typing a command or two into a terminal. Beyond that, the website lets you browse, publish from a folder or a GitHub link, and manage everything by clicking — no coding required to use skills other people made.

What do "publish" and "install" actually mean?

skl publish uploads your skill so it has a home. skl install drops one skill into the project you're working on right now. Bare skl install rebuilds every skill a project needs, in one go, on a fresh computer. Coming from npm? skl install is npm install , and bare skl install is npm ci.

What's a "version," and why do I have to type one in?

A version (start at 1, then 2, 3…) is a labeled snapshot. Once you publish a version it's frozen forever, so everyone who installed it always gets the exact same thing. To change something, bump the number and publish again. skl won't bump it for you — on purpose, so you always decide what counts as a new version.

Is my stuff private? Who can see what I publish?

By default a skill is public — anyone can find it. Flip it to private and it's yours alone: hidden from the catalog, and anyone else who asks for it just gets a polite no. That rule is enforced by the server, not your browser, so there's no clever URL that sneaks past it.

Where does all this live, and is my data safe?

Accepted Answer

On an always-on server, so your skills are ready on any computer with nothing to set up. Anything you mark private is kept private by the server itself, and your skills aren't trained on, sold, or mined. You share exactly what you choose to; everything else stays yours.

Oops — I published something I shouldn't have. Can I delete it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. From the website you can take down a whole skill or just a single version, and it stops showing up right away. One honest heads-up: anyone who already installed it still has their copy on their own computer — same as un-sending an email people already read.

Is it free?

For now, yes — free to use. If that ever changes we'll say so clearly and well ahead of time.
